Google's Gemini is on the verge of a significant update as support for Rich Communication Services (RCS) is set to be integrated. This enhancement aims to improve messaging capabilities, offering users a more advanced and seamless communication experience.

Tl;dr

  • Gemini may soon support RCS in Google Messages.
  • Code hints at group chats, media, and encryption features.
  • No official launch date, but rollout seems imminent.
  • Hints in the Code: Gemini Poised for a Major Upgrade

Whispers of a significant shift for Gemini, the artificial intelligence service from Google, have started to circulate — and not without good reason. The ever-vigilant team at Android Authority recently discovered some telling clues inside version 16.25.44 of the Google app. Their findings suggest that Gemini is on track to “detect RCS capabilities”. While this feature is not yet fully baked into the chatbot, such traces in the code indicate that direct interaction between Gemini and Google Messages—leveraging the advanced RCS protocol—could be just around the corner.

A Frustrating Limitation—and Its Possible End

To date, many users have lamented a notable shortcoming: through Google Messages, Gemini has been restricted to sending only standard SMS. Advanced options—such as sharing images or utilizing richer messaging features available with RCS (Rich Communication Services)—have remained out of reach. That situation, however, appears poised for change as development accelerates behind the scenes.

A New Range of Features on the Horizon

Should this update materialize, it could unlock functionalities that go well beyond basic messaging. According to indications in the app’s code, users might soon enjoy:

    • The ability to create or join group conversations,
    • The option to send GIFs and emoticons,
    • The chance to react to messages or enable end-to-end encryption.

Yet some caveats remain. It’s important to note that while end-to-end encryption could become available via RCS, its absence on iPhone continues to limit secure cross-platform exchanges. Whenever recipients do not support RCS, communications will default back to conventional SMS—a format both less secure and less versatile.

No Official Timeline, But Signs Point to Imminence

Despite these promising developments unearthed by Android Authority, no formal announcement has emerged from Google. In fact, the project is still described as « ongoing ». Nevertheless, those clear indicators within the source code hint that an official launch could arrive sooner than many expect. For now, users eager for more dynamic—and secure—messaging can only wait for what seems increasingly inevitable: full-fledged RCS integration within Gemini.
