Last Wednesday, MasterClass unveiled On Call, a new web and iOS app that allows people to interact with AI versions of its instructors. Currently, On Call features two personalities, embodying the expertise of former FBI hostage negotiator Chris Voss and neuroscientist Dr. Matt Walker from the University of Berkeley. In the future, MasterClass plans to expand its roster to include renowned experts such as Gordon Ramsay, Mark Cuban, Bill Nye, and LeVar Burton.

“This isn’t just another generic AI chatbot that scrapes data from the internet,” says David Rogier, CEO of MasterClass. The AI has been trained with proprietary data from the experts, including unpublished notes, private research, lessons, emails, and skills they have never shared before.

On Call: A Standalone Product

On Call is a standalone product requiring a separate subscription from the regular offerings of MasterClass. To access On Call, users will need to pay $10 per month or $84 per year. According to Inc., MasterClass has signed contracts with each On Call instructor to use their voice and expertise, although the interactions are not as sophisticated as those depicted in the company’s advertisements shared on social media.
