Global Chromecast Outage: Users Report Widespread Malfunctions

Chromecast users worldwide are reporting malfunctions with their devices, indicating a widespread failure of the technology.
A Black Sunday for Chromecast Users
Last Sunday, a significant number of users voiced their frustrations on the r/googlehome subreddit. Their complaint: their 2nd generation Chromecast and Chromecast Audio devices were not functioning.
A Global Authentication Error
Facing redditors worldwide, the issue involved Chromecast devices failing to authenticate during connection attempts. It was clarified that the error does not affect Google TV, but the device itself. Affected users were advised to visit support.google.com/chromecast for troubleshooting help.
Unfortunately, “the support page is likely of no help”, as reported by users. They had already tried common fixes without success, including rebooting the device, factory resetting, reinstalling the Google Home app, clearing cache/data, and testing different networks.
Alarming Error Messages
There appears to be more than one problem, as noted by 9to5 Google. The outlet received an error message variant stating: “Unreliable Device: [name] could not be verified. This may be due to outdated device firmware.”
Google has not yet commented on what caused the fault. However, it seems that only older devices are affected. Newer models, such as the 3rd generation Chromecast and Chromecast Ultra, are operating as expected.
End of Support for Older Models?
This situation has led to speculation that Google might be quietly phasing out support for older models. However, it’s important to note that Google has made no announcements regarding ending support, unlike what was done with the original Chromecast.
The current consensus is that the issue is likely related to the verification firmware. If so, a server-side fix is needed, meaning users can do nothing but wait for now.
