Google Discontinues Nest Protect, Partners with First Alert on New Smart Smoke Detector

Google is discontinuing Nest Protect and partnering with First Alert to introduce a new smart smoke detector.
Google Discontinues Sales of Nest Protect
Renowned for its smart smoke detectors, Google’s Nest Protect has been a top choice for many. However, this chapter is coming to a close. Google announced today that it will cease selling this esteemed product, shifting focus to a collaboration with First Alert to develop a new smart smoke detector compatible with Google Home.
Partnership with First Alert for a New Detector
Rather than updating the Nest Protect, as done with other Nest devices, Google has opted to end the line and partner with First Alert, a company with extensive experience in smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. The replacement, the First Alert Smart Smoke & Carbon Monoxide (CO) Alarm, will replicate nearly all features of the Nest Protect.
In emergencies, this new unit will sound a siren and voice alert detailing the type and location of the threat. Additionally, an early warning alert will highlight emerging issues and allow users to silence the alarm either directly on the device or via an app.
Connectivity and Availability
The First Alert devices can be interconnected with each other and with existing Nest Protects. They connect to the cloud via Wi-Fi and will notify users 7 days before the batteries run low. However, these devices are not compatible with Matter and will initially only work with Google Home.
The First Alert Smart Smoke & Carbon Monoxide (CO) Alarm will be available in the US and Canada in the coming weeks, priced at $129.99. Google will continue to sell the Nest Protect until stocks run out and will support the devices until their expiration date.
End of Nest X Yale Smart Lock
The Nest Protect isn’t the only product reaching its end; Google also announced the discontinuation of the Nest x Yale Lock, planning to replace it with a Matter-compatible model. The Yale Smart Lock with Matter will be available later this summer.
