Google Launches New Budget-Friendly Mobile Plan
Looking for an economical mobile plan in the US? Google might have just what you need with its new Unlimited Essentials plan.
Google Fi, the tech giant’s MVNO, offers flexible connectivity across multiple cellular networks and Wi-Fi, optimizing connections for superior coverage. Launched in April 2015 as Project Fi, it was renamed to Google Fi in 2018 and to Google Fi Wireless in 2023.
Google Fi positions itself as a flexible alternative to major US carriers, offering multi-network coverage, transparent plans, excellent digital experience, and included international roaming. Ideal for travelers and connected users, it remains niche compared to Verizon, AT&T, or T-Mobile. Google Fi is not available in Europe as it is exclusive to US residents with activation in the States. Regulatory hurdles, lack of local partnerships, and competitive European offerings limit its expansion, restricting its use to American travelers abroad temporarily.
Unlimited Essentials: A $35 Per Month Plan
Starting today, at $35 per month, Google’s Unlimited Essentials plan offers unlimited data, calls, and texts, appealing to those looking to minimize mobile spending.
Beyond unlimited data, this plan includes 30 GB of high-speed data monthly. After reaching this cap, speeds reduce to 256 kbps for the remainder of the billing cycle. Additionally, your smartwatch, likely the Pixel Watch, can enjoy full connectivity.
A Choice Among Several Google Plans
This new plan marks the 10th anniversary of the Google Fi Wireless service. It joins two other revised unlimited data options by Google.
For instance, the Simply Unlimited plan has been renamed Unlimited Standard, still priced at $50 per month per line but now includes 50 GB of high-speed data instead of 35 GB. It also features 25 GB of high-speed tethering, a significant increase from the previous 5 GB. It doesn’t offer full international data but does allow data usage in Mexico and Canada.
The Unlimited Premium, formerly Unlimited Plus, has also seen improvements. It maintains its $65 monthly cost per line and now provides a high-speed data cap of 100 GB. However, unlimited high-speed tethering has been replaced by a 50 GB limit. The premium tier still includes international data in over 200 countries.
A New Challenger for Low-Cost Mobile Operators
Google’s new Unlimited Essentials plan competes well with other low-cost options in our top picks for unlimited data plans. US low-cost mobile operators like Mint Mobile, Visible, and Boost Mobile all offer unlimited data plans under $40 per month, and Google Fi now joins the fray.
In conclusion, while Google Fi’s Unlimited Premium plan may remain the most attractive option for frequent travelers, the launch of Unlimited Essentials provides another alternative for those prioritizing a low monthly rate.
