Google Launches Standalone Gemini App for iPhone

Currently, availability is limited to devices located in Australia, India, the United States, the United Kingdom, and the Philippines.
Google Unveils Dedicated Gemini AI App for iPhone
Following a phased launch in the Philippines earlier this week, Google has now released a dedicated Gemini AI app for iPhone users. MacRumors first spotted this free software, which is available for download in Australia, India, the US, and the UK.
Features and Compatibility
Prior to today, iPhone users could access Gemini through the Google app, albeit with significant limitations. The dedicated app introduces the Gemini Live feature, allowing users to interact with the AI agent from the iPhone’s dynamic island and lock screen without needing the app open. While the app is free to download, a Gemini Advanced subscription is required to unlock all features.
The app is compatible with iPhones running iOS 16 and later, meaning owners of older models like the iPhone 8 and iPhone X can utilize the AI agent. It’s important to note that the oldest iPhone capable of running Apple Intelligence is the iPhone 15 Pro. However, this isn’t a direct comparison; Apple’s AI features are designed to primarily utilize on-device processing, and more complex queries are handled through the company’s private cloud computing framework.
A Further Step in AI Integration
It’s not surprising to see Google rolling out a dedicated Gemini AI app for the iPhone. Especially since, prior to WWDC 2024, Apple had discussions with Google about integrating the AI agent directly into its devices. This represents a significant advancement in embedding AI into our daily lives, with smartphones becoming increasingly mobile and sophisticated.
