Google May Bring Back Face ID Tech in Pixel 11: Key Details Revealed
Google is considering reintroducing facial recognition technology in the Pixel 11. Here’s what you need to know.
Infrared Makes a Comeback in the Google Pixel 11
Recent leaks suggest that the Google Pixel 11 is poised to revolutionize facial recognition technology by reintroducing infrared cameras, last seen in the Google Pixel 4, to free up screen space. These cameras provide fast, secure authentication and operate effectively in the dark.
Since the Pixel 7, Google has utilized the front camera for facial recognition; however, the reintroduction of infrared, which uses heat emitted by objects to create an image, would enhance the versatility of the Pixel 11’s Face ID feature.
Support from Google Tensor G6 Image Processor
Leaked documents also reveal that the new Google Tensor G6 image processor will support an under-screen IR camera system. This system includes a new “lite” interface within an ISP, designed to optimize system management and reduce power consumption.
Significant Improvements Expected
The Pixel 11 is set to feature numerous enhancements, including new AI-based editing and drawing capabilities and an improved version of Night Sight that operates directly on the device without cloud support. The device will also potentially increase telephoto zoom up to 100x using its AI, with further hardware improvements to the cameras also anticipated.
Release Date Still Uncertain
However, it is crucial to note that these details are not confirmed. The Google Pixel 11 is not expected until 2026, and while the processor may support an under-screen IR camera, it is not guaranteed that the phone will feature one. Only time will tell.
