Google now aims to free you from the burden of handling tedious phone calls by having artificial intelligence take over the task.

Google Unveils New AI Feature

Google is pushing the boundaries with its latest artificial intelligence innovation. Named “Ask for Me”, this experimental feature could revolutionize how we handle a tedious aspect of modern life: making phone calls.

How Does “Ask for Me” Work?

Google’s “Ask for Me” function uses AI to call local businesses and inquire about their “prices and availability”.

It doesn’t mean it will manage all your calls, but it could significantly reduce the number you need to make, provided the information isn’t already available on the business’s website or Google Maps page.

Which Sectors Are Involved?

According to Rose Yao, Google’s Vice President of Product Management, the feature is currently being tested with auto repair shops and nail salons.

It employs the same underlying technology as Duplex, Google’s AI that can make restaurant reservations. Businesses will be notified they are speaking with an AI and can opt out of receiving AI calls if they choose.

“Ask for Me”: A Tool Under Testing

Availability is limited, but users of Google Search can sign up at Google’s Search Labs to try out “Ask for Me”. Keep in mind that this is an experimental feature, meaning errors may occur. There are also capacity limits, meaning your AI-powered call might be placed on hold before being handled by a person.

Yao states that the underlying Duplex technology has already “helped millions of businesses” keep their clients informed with up-to-date information, proving particularly valuable during the fast-changing circumstances of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Stay tuned for more updates on this exciting innovation from Google.
