Satellite messaging is now supported by three additional carriers for Google Pixel 9 and Samsung Galaxy S25 users, expanding communication options in remote or no-network areas.

Satellite Connectivity Enhancements for Pixel 9 and Galaxy S25

While the Google Pixel 9a lacks satellite connectivity, it’s now confirmed that Google’s Pixel 9 and Samsung’s Galaxy S25 will receive significant satellite connectivity upgrades. However, access depends on your subscription with the right carrier.

Telecom Operators Commit to Satellite Messaging

This week, Verizon announced it will enable these two phones to send non-urgent messages via satellite. Today, Spectrum and Xfinity have also confirmed they will provide emergency satellite messaging services for these devices.

These three carriers have partnered with Skylo, a provider of a “non-terrestrial” network. Skylo acts like a mobile virtual network operator for the satellite connectivity industry, utilizing existing satellite infrastructure instead of building its own.

Skylo, a Key Player in Satellite Connectivity

For those wondering, Skylo is also the provider behind the emergency satellite communications already integrated in the Google Pixel 9 and various iPhones.

A Step Forward for User Safety

The specifics are less important than the fact that these phones will now be able to connect to satellites, ensuring connectivity even when there is no cell coverage locally. This means that in emergencies, you can still call for help.

This is especially crucial for Galaxy S25 owners. While Google has partnered with Skylo to offer emergency satellite coverage for 2 years, Samsung has not made such a deal. Thus, your satellite connectivity entirely depends on your carrier’s offerings.

Note that Verizon’s rollout of its satellite messaging service may take up to two weeks. Spectrum and Xfinity, while announcing their services are “now available”, stated that access is “expected to be added in the coming weeks”.

Regardless of your carrier, you might have to wait a bit before you can use these new features. Hopefully, more providers will join this trend in the months to come.
