Explore the Google Pixel 9a, an affordable smartphone that now outperforms the iPhone 16 in terms of performance and user experience.

Google Pixel 9a: An Affordable Smartphone

Gone are the days when a good phone had to be an expensive flagship model. With this philosophy, Google designed the Pixel 9a. Priced at €549, this smartphone emphasizes value for money and might just make you forget about the iPhone 16e.

Comparison with the iPhone 16e

Many, including myself, thought the iPhone 16e would bring Apple back into the affordable phone discussion. However, its surprising cost of $599 makes it less appealing despite its solid performance. In my review of the iPhone 16e, I noted I’d rather pay extra for the iPhone 16 instead.

It appears Google understands better what it takes to make an economical phone, even as newcomers like the Nothing Phone 3a and 3a Pro directly target the Pixel line. The Pixel 9a, despite a new design that I’m still warming up to, might just make me completely forget the iPhone 16e.

Features of the Google Pixel 9a

The Pixel 9a sports a 6.3-inch “Actua pOLED” display with a refresh rate of 60 to 120Hz. It features a main 48MP camera (ƒ/1.7), a 13MP ultra-wide (ƒ/2.2), and a 13MP front camera (ƒ/2.2). The chipset is a Google Tensor G4, paired with 8GB of RAM and two storage options: 128GB or 256GB. The battery capacity is 5100 mAh, offering 23W wired charging and 7.5W wireless charging. It comes in four colors: Obsidian, Porcelain, Iris, and Peony, and has an IP68 dust and water resistance rating.

A Better Value Proposition

Google gets more right with the Pixel 9a. While I remain undecided on the new design, the rest of the phone seems to be a substantial improvement over its predecessor, especially since the price is kept at $499. Given Google’s track record with camera performance and battery life in their Pixel A series, I am optimistic about the future of the Pixel 9a once the full evaluation process begins.

What’s more impressive is that the Pixel 9a includes the same AI features as the other Pixel 9 models, further enhancing its value. With the more expensive iPhone 16e, Apple seems to have missed the mark in my view to compete in this mid-range space, while Google is clearly cruising ahead.
