Google Unveils Pixel 9a: An Affordable Smartphone with Compromises

Google has finally unveiled the Pixel 9a. As with other A-series Pixel models, the Pixel 9a features many of the flagship Pixel 9’s capabilities but at a significantly lower price.

A Diminished Version of Gemini AI

The Pixel 9a includes access to Gemini AI, but it comes with a less powerful version, the Gemini XXS, unlike the more robust Gemini Nano XS used in the rest of the Pixel 9 series. This choice appears to stem from the Pixel 9a’s 8 GB of RAM, compared to the Pixel 9’s upgraded 12 GB, which enhances its AI capabilities.

Impact of RAM on AI Performance

AI performance heavily relies on sufficient memory to function efficiently. The Pixel 9a’s lower RAM affects its ability to run the same embedded AI models as the Pixel 9. One major difference is that whereas the Gemini XS operates continuously in the background, the XXS in the Pixel 9a needs to be loaded each time it’s required, thus avoiding continuous memory usage but at the cost of slower and less efficient operation.

Compromises for Affordability

Despite these drawbacks, the Pixel 9a still presents great value at $499, especially compared to the $599 iPhone 16. The Pixel 9a also maintains some typical compromises of the A-series, such as a less robust design, older Gorilla Glass 3 screen, and a 13 MP ultrawide camera instead of 48 MP. Charging speeds, both wired and wireless, are also considerably slower than those of the Pixel 9.
