Google Embraces Nuclear Power for AI Development

Digital titan Google has revealed plans on Monday to partner with startup Kairos Power to construct seven small nuclear reactors across the United States, aiming to boost its burgeoning artificial intelligence development.

The Bet on Small Modular Reactors

Google and Kairos Power’s joint venture seeks to introduce 500 megawatts of nuclear energy by the decade’s end using small modular reactors (SMR). These compact reactors, built in factories rather than constructed onsite, offer a cost-effective alternative to traditional large-scale power plants.

Regulatory Approval Required

Before realizing their vision, Kairos Power must secure design and construction permits from the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission. It is noteworthy that the startup has already gained approval for a demonstration reactor in Tennessee, set to be operational by 2027.

A Strategic Partnership for Google

While financial specifics of the deal remain undisclosed, Google claims the agreement’s structure will help diminish costs and expedite energy deployment. “By purchasing electricity from multiple reactors, we will help accelerate the repeated deployment of reactors needed to lower costs and bring Kairos Power’s technology to market faster,” wrote Michael Terrell, Google’s Senior Director for Energy and Climate.

This initiative is part of a broader trend where tech giants are seeking sustainable energy solutions to power their data centers amid the skyrocketing energy demands driven by the rapid expansion of AI.
