GotaTun emerges as the latest advancement from Mullvad, promising to redefine privacy and security in the VPN landscape. This new development aims to enhance user experience while maintaining Mullvad’s well-known commitment to digital anonymity and data protection.

TL;DR

  • Mullvad unveils GotaTun, a new Rust-based VPN core.
  • Major stability boost and feature retention on Android.
  • OpenVPN support ends in January 2026.

A New Chapter for Mullvad: GotaTun Takes the Stage

With the introduction of GotaTun, Mullvad is setting out to reshape its VPN infrastructure—beginning with Android. This bold move sees the company rolling out a completely reengineered version of WireGuard, now written in the robust programming language Rust. By doing so, Mullvad aims to provide its users with not only faster and more reliable connections, but also greater protection as digital threats become increasingly complex.

Addressing Persistent Technical Challenges

Previously, the company relied on “wireguard-go”, a Go-based multi-platform adaptation of WireGuard. However, internal analysis revealed that this approach was far from optimal: over 85% of app crashes on Android could be traced directly to this component. The development team found that juggling maintenance between Go and Rust presented unnecessary complications, prompting a decisive shift. The impact was tangible; since the deployment of GotaTun (version 2025.10) in late November, user reports indicate a near-total elimination of crashes on Android and generally positive feedback across the board.

Features Preserved, Security Enhanced

Stability isn’t the only priority in this evolution. The hallmarks that have made Mullvad stand out—such as its “Defense Against AI-guided Traffic Analysis (DAITA)” technology and advanced Multihop capabilities—are fully integrated into GotaTun’s Android offering. In a further step toward transparency and trust, an independent security audit is scheduled for 2025 to rigorously evaluate the new system’s resilience.

Several factors explain this decision:

  • Progressive rollout planned for desktop and iOS platforms by 2026.
  • Definitive discontinuation of OpenVPN support starting January 2026.

The Road Ahead: Performance and Simplicity at the Core

Recent tests have underlined the technical prowess of this update, with WireGuard-powered speeds peaking at an impressive 2140 Mbps—confirming Mullvad’s position among the fastest VPN providers available today. While some questions remain about the final stages of platform migration, it is clear that Mullvad is intent on focusing future development around a single protocol: WireGuard. For those who prize privacy and cutting-edge performance, this transformation marks a significant—and promising—step forward for the VPN landscape.
