Grok’s New ‘Aurora’ Image Generator Returns, Now Available to All on X

It’s official: On December 9, 2024, company X announced its new image generator, named Aurora. The enhanced capabilities of the Grok tool, which includes Aurora, will be available on X’s platform in select countries and will roll out to all users within a week, according to a company blog post.

Aurora’s Unexpected Debut

Aurora made a surprising debut the previous Saturday, catching many Grok users off guard. The photorealistic images produced were widely shared on X’s platform. However, by Sunday afternoon, Aurora had vanished. It appears Aurora was prematurely released. In response to a user who posted images of Tesla’s Cybertruck created with Aurora, Elon Musk tweeted: “It’s our internal image generation system. Still in beta, but it will improve quickly.”

Controversies Surrounding Aurora

The launch of Aurora follows X’s decision to make Grok 2 free to use, albeit with limitations for non-paying users. The previous Grok image generator was criticized for its lack of content restrictions, allowing for the creation of offensive images of political figures and celebrities. Aurora seems to follow this trend. TechCrunch tested Aurora before it was withdrawn and found that it did not reject a request to create a bloody image of Donald Trump.

Moreover, examples have been shared on X of generated images featuring public figures and copyright-protected characters, including multiple images of Sam Altman and Elon Musk, as well as an image of Luigi and Mickey Mouse in a boxing match. However, TechCrunch reported that Aurora would not produce nude images.
