Interpol has released a "black notice" featuring facial reconstructions and key details aimed at identifying previously unknown victims, potentially solving some longstanding anonymous cases.

Interpol, the global police cooperation agency, has launched an unprecedented initiative dubbed the “black notice.” The aim? To uncover the identities of 46 women found deceased across six European countries over several decades. This endeavor seeks to provide closure for grieving families and render justice to these previously unnamed victims.

A Public Appeal for Assistance

Interpol’s Secretary General, Jürgen Stock, has made a public appeal, stating: “The smallest piece of information could be crucial in solving these mysteries.” Through this campaign, the agency hopes to identify these women, referred to by investigators as “the woman in pink,” “the introvert,” or “the globetrotter.” Minute details like a tattoo, a necklace, or a unique physical trait could be key to their identification.

A Campaign Already Bearing Fruit

Launched in May 2023, Interpol’s “Identify Me” campaign has already identified Rita Roberts, a 31-year-old British woman found in Antwerp over three decades ago. Relatives recognized her distinctive flower tattoo from Interpol’s documents. Encouraged by this success, the organization has expanded the campaign to include unsolved cases in France, Spain, and Italy.

The Power of the “Black Notice”

The “black notice” consists of alerts typically reserved for police use. By publishing them, Interpol aims to name victims like “the woman with butterfly tattoos” or “the pregnant woman with garnet necklaces.” Each victim’s facial reconstruction and details about the location where they were found are posted on Interpol’s website.

Singers Axelle Red and actress Carice van Houten, ambassadors of the campaign, urge solidarity: “Look at these women… could they be your friend, your cousin, your colleague, your patient, your neighbor who suddenly disappeared?”

In response, athlete Marie-José Pérec and actress and writer Sarah Biasini serve as French ambassadors for the campaign. Together, they hope that Interpol’s resolute action will restore these women’s identities and solve these lingering cases.
