Hema has announced the withdrawal of certain children’s toys from its stores after discovering asbestos contamination. This precautionary move aims to protect young consumers from potential health risks associated with exposure to the hazardous substance.

TL;DR

  • Toy sand kits recalled due to asbestos contamination.
  • Products sold at Hema stores across France.
  • Immediate return and refund advised for affected items.

Unexpected Hazard in Children’s Sand Kits

As the school holidays prompt parents to seek screen-free entertainment for their children, many have turned to creative activities as a wholesome alternative. Yet, a recent warning has disrupted this seemingly safe choice: several popular children’s sand kits have been pulled from shelves at Hema stores throughout France after traces of asbestos, a dangerous substance, were discovered in at least one tested tube.

Details of the Product Recall

The official alert came via the Rappel Conso platform, which issued three separate notifications regarding potentially contaminated items in the “children’s products and childcare” section. Specifically, families should check for these products:

  • Sandy creations cards and magnets: Barcode 15920121 or 15920122, sold from February 2023 to March 2025.
  • Sand play and craft kit: Barcode 15900101 or 15900102, available spring 2024 to February 2026.
  • Set of six sanders: Barcode 15900035, offered during the same period as the previous item.

Examining barcodes is crucial to determine if any of these items are present at home.

The Risk: Asbestos Where It Shouldn’t Be

The real concern lies in the unexpected detection of asbestos, a material known for its severe health risks—especially among children. Even limited handling of these tainted kits poses genuine dangers. For this reason, authorities are urging immediate discontinuation of use.

Return Policy and Next Steps

Anyone who finds one of the implicated products should not hesitate: return it promptly to any Hema store for a full refund. This policy remains valid until April 19, 2026. To address further questions or concerns, a dedicated helpline (01 40 39 94 61) has been set up.

In light of these events, increased vigilance when choosing manual or creative activities seems more necessary than ever—even when products appear entirely harmless at first glance.
