HMD Launches OffGrid: A Lifeline Technology for Adventurers
At this year’s CES, HMD caught everyone’s attention by unveiling OffGrid, a satellite-based emergency gadget designed to keep outdoor enthusiasts safe while exploring remote areas around the globe.
How Does OffGrid Work?
OffGrid operates using the L Band satellite radio spectrum, allowing users to connect directly with satellites, even in the most challenging environments. This marks a breakthrough in emergency communication technology. The device can send texts through an affiliated app and also send safety signals to friends or family. It enables users to contact emergency services and share their location as well.
A Rugged and Portable Emergency Gadget
OffGrid is a portable device that can be attached to a keychain. It meets the MIL-STD 810H durability standard and boasts an impressive three-day battery life, all while weighing just 60 grams. OffGrid is priced affordably at $200, although a subscription is required to access many of its premium features.
Subscription Options and Availability
The “Unlimited Plan” costs $15 per month and includes unlimited texts and check-ins, plus SOS services. A live tracking option is also available for an additional $5 per month. The “Freedom Plan” requires an annual payment of $80 and allows for sending 350 text messages and unlimited check-ins. This plan also includes live tracking at a cost of $0.10 per ping. OffGrid by HMD will be available this month in the USA, Europe, Australia, and New Zealand, with plans to expand to other regions later in the year.
