Beware of fake AI applications targeting both PCs and Macs to steal sensitive information and credentials. Exercise caution with suspicious links found in online searches and social media ads.

Online Scams: Caution Against Fake AI Apps

In today’s digital landscape, a new threat has surfaced: malicious entities are using links to fake AI image and video generation apps to steal login credentials and browsing histories from infected Windows PCs and Macs.

How Do These Fake Apps Work?

According to BleepingComputer and cybersecurity researcher gonjxa, these fake apps are spread through search results and social media ads, containing malicious links. These links lead to professionally designed websites that claim to offer an AI image and video editing software, EditProAi.

But be warned: the download link for this purported AI app actually contains malware, specifically the Windows variant of Lumma Stealer for PCs and the macOS version of AMOS for Apple computers.

What Are the Risks?

The malware targets Chromium-based browsers to steal credentials, passwords, credit card data, cookies, and browsing history, as well as cryptocurrencies. Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge, Mozilla Firefox, Opera, and Samsung Internet are all vulnerable.

The stolen data is then archived and sent back to the attackers, where it can be sold on the dark web or used for further attacks. “If you have downloaded and installed this program, consider all your logins, saved passwords, and cryptocurrency wallets compromised.”

How to Protect Yourself?

Securing your information is crucial. Use two-factor or multi-factor authentication, and change all passwords for sites visited after installing the malicious app. Additionally, employing a robust antivirus on your PC or Mac is recommended to detect and block malware before it infects your system.

Lastly, always opt for well-known and reputable sites and services. “If something seems too good to be true, it almost certainly is.” Stay vigilant and protect your personal information online.
