They consistently pressure the company for improved working conditions and higher wages. How will the company respond to these demands?

Amazon Confronts Unionization of Its Drivers

New York City’s Amazon drivers have made a pivotal decision regarding their career futures by opting to join the Teamsters union, seeking improved working conditions and fairer pay.

A Year of Mobilization

A Teamsters press release reveals that these drivers have been fighting for a year to secure fair wages, set work schedules, reasonable workloads, and proper vehicle maintenance.

They escalated their efforts by striking last December, participating in a national protest against “Amazon’s alleged unfair labor practices and its attempts to break unions”.

Seeking Better Working Conditions

Unionizing theoretically provides drivers additional leverage to negotiate with Amazon. However, the corporate giant may not readily cooperate.

For instance, Amazon’s worker union, one of the first within the company in the U.S., has yet to secure a union contract two years post-formation.

Significant Progress

Despite challenges, the Teamsters have achieved notable victories for Amazon workers. Last month, a regional director for the National Labor Relations Board determined Amazon is a joint employer of some third-party drivers in Palmdale, California.

The union hopes this ruling sets a precedent for other DSP drivers. Drivers from Queens are the first Amazon workers to unionize with the Teamsters following this decision.
