India: Dengue Outbreak Hits Lucknow with 600 Cases in Two Weeks

In October, Lucknow experienced a surge in dengue cases, with the count reaching 600 in just two weeks.
Dengue Cases Surge in Lucknow
Lucknow, at the heart of India, is experiencing an alarming rise in dengue cases. Recently, there has been a significant increase in infections. By October 14, confirmed cases reached 653, a sharp rise from 388 in September.
Impact on the Healthcare System
This surge in dengue cases could severely strain the local healthcare system. Experts fear shortages of hospital beds and longer waiting times. They also suspect the actual number of cases might be higher, as many small health centers rely on strip tests, which may not accurately confirm dengue.
According to epidemiologist Dr. Rahul Gam, “Many small centers use strip tests, which aren’t confirmatory for dengue. Only ELISA or PCR tests are considered by the government, so many cases might be overlooked”.
Hospital Situation
The situation in hospitals remains tense. CMS Dr. NB Singh reports that Balrampur Hospital has allocated 36 beds for dengue patients, with 28 currently recuperating. Meanwhile, Dr. Ajay Tripathi noted that Lokbandhu Hospital has 20 beds available with 13 patients admitted.
Importance of Prevention
Despite the challenges, Dr. Manoj Agarwal, head of medical services, assures there is no shortage of hospital beds, with only 76 confirmed dengue patients currently admitted in various facilities. He also noted that the increase in cases this month is lower than last year’s.
Dr. Agarwal urged the public to maintain cleanliness and use mosquito nets to prevent the disease. He emphasized the need for increased awareness and timely medical attention to manage dengue and protect community health.
