India has overtaken China to become the leading supplier of smartphones to the United States. This shift marks a significant change in global supply chains, highlighting India’s growing role in the smartphone manufacturing sector for the American market.

  • India now leads US smartphone exports, overtaking China.
  • Apple’s strategy and US-China tensions drive the shift.
  • Overall US market growth remains modest, despite changes.

Apple’s Influence Reshapes Global Supply Chains

Recent months have seen a notable reordering of the global smartphone supply chain. At the heart of this transformation lies Apple, which has significantly ramped up production in India. This move is widely interpreted as a calculated response to escalating political and economic friction between Washington and Beijing. According to Sanyam Chaurasia, principal analyst at Canalys, « the steps taken by Apple reflect a deliberate effort to diversify assembly sites in light of mounting external pressures ». As a result, even the Pro variants from the iPhone 16 lineup are now being manufactured on Indian soil.

Key Figures: India Overtakes China in US Shipments

For the first time, India has surpassed China as the top supplier of smartphones shipped to the United States. During the second quarter of 2025, data from Canalys reveals that devices assembled in India accounted for 44% of all shipments—an extraordinary leap from just 13% one year prior. In contrast, China’s share collapsed to only 25%, compared with its previous dominance at 61%. Sandwiched between these two giants, Vietnam, benefiting largely from its role in producing devices for Samsung, captured an impressive 30% share.

The origins of US-bound smartphones can be summed up as follows:

  • India: 44% (annual increase of 240%)
  • Vietnam: 30% (propelled by Samsung’s output)
  • China: just 25% (sharp decline)

A Shifting Landscape Amid Modest Growth

Yet for all this turbulence in sourcing, total US smartphone deliveries edged up by just +1%. While Samsung, buoyed by robust demand for its Galaxy A-series, enjoyed a sharp rise (+38%), Apple’s shipments fell back (-11%) to reach 13.3 million units during the quarter. As noted by senior Canalys analyst Runar Bjorhovde: « a surge in early-year stockpiling aimed at dodging potential tariffs met with lukewarm demand as economic uncertainty persisted. »

Tensions and Political Backlash Cloud Outlook

Geopolitical undercurrents remain impossible to ignore. In recent statements, US President Donald Trump warned that any iPhone not made domestically could face tariffs up to 25%. His message—delivered directly to Apple CEO Tim Cook—was unequivocal: « No interest in you building in India ».

Ultimately, beyond mere logistics, these shifts underscore how global smartphone manufacturing is now navigating an era defined by caution and unpredictability. The next chapters will likely be shaped as much by political maneuvering as by technological innovation.
