Instagram Revamps DMs to Challenge iMessage

Instagram's latest update introduces a host of new features for direct messaging, enhancing the user experience by making it more engaging and interactive.
Instagram Rolls Out Major Messaging System Update
Instagram, the social networking titan, has unveiled a significant update to its messaging system, incorporating new tools poised to enhance its competitiveness with direct messaging platforms like Apple iMessage and various other third-party services.
Music Sharing and Translation: Instagram’s Latest Features
The first major feature is music sharing. Users can now send music tracks in both individual messages and group chats by accessing the sticker tray and selecting the “Music” option. This feature allows users to search Instagram’s audio library, although only 30-second snippets of available songs can be shared.
Additionally, Instagram has integrated a translation tool into its direct messages, supporting 99 languages. To translate, users simply press and hold a message and select “Translate”, with the translation appearing immediately below the original message.
Pinning Messages and Scheduling Sends
Instagram now allows users to pin messages, images, or Reels to the top of conversations by pressing and holding a message and selecting “Pin”. Up to three messages can be pinned per chat.
Moreover, messages can now be scheduled up to 29 days in advance by holding down the send button. Instagram has also introduced a method for inviting people to a group chat using a QR code.
Gradual Rollout and Future Plans
The rollout of these features starts today for iOS and Android users worldwide, with a web update also in the pipeline.
Instagram continues to innovate, having recently tested a “dislike” button for comments and announced the development of a video editing app akin to CapCut. The platform has also extended Reels to three minutes, likely in a bid to compete with TikTok.
