ION-X: Electric Propulsion Revolutionizing Space Travel

The Paris-based startup ION-X has raised 13 million euros to scale up production of an innovative space propulsion system, marking a significant step towards clean and efficient electric space mobility.
An Electric Revolution in Space
In 2018, Elon Musk’s spectacular stunt sent a Tesla into space, underscoring an undeniable truth: the future of space travel is electric. Major space agencies like NASA, ESA, and France’s CNES have been experimenting with electric propulsion for decades, aiming for cleaner, more efficient space mobility.
ION-X and the Bet on Electrospray
Amidst this backdrop, Paris-based startup ION-X emerges as an innovative player. ION-X is dedicated to developing a novel space propulsion engine: the “Electrohydrodynamic Electrospray Thruster”. This engine operates by applying a high-voltage electric field to an ionic liquid fuel, making the thruster combustion-free, non-toxic, and non-flammable, thus reducing environmental and safety risks.
With the small satellite market booming, ION-X aims to provide “revolutionary and cost-effective propulsion solutions”. This technological revolution, previously confined to laboratories, is set to go commercial following a recent successful funding round.
Financial Success for an Ambitious Vision
ION-X has recently raised 13 million euros to commercialize its technology, adding to the initial 4 million euros raised in 2022. CEO Thomas Hiriart views this funding round as a crucial step for the company. ION-X’s more efficient and compact thruster promises a “significant commercial position in the market of reliable thrusters.”
Preparing for the Great Space Leap
ION-X plans to test its technology in orbit next year on a satellite from Danish company Space Inventor, as part of a broader ESA mission. The company also plans to build a production facility near Paris, aiming to produce 200 ionic thrusters annually by 2028.
