The beta version of iOS 18.2 has been released, featuring exclusive functionalities for the European Union that won't be available in the United States.

Exciting Updates for iPhone Users in the EU

The beta version of iOS 18.2 has rolled out, loaded with AI enhancements and upgrades. However, users in Europe are treated to unique features thanks to the Digital Markets Act (DMA).

Pre-installed Apps Now Removable

While it was already possible to delete some of Apple’s pre-installed applications, iOS 18.2 expands this capability. Under DMA regulations, tech companies must allow users to uninstall any unwanted apps and software on their devices. Newly removable apps include Safari, Messages, Camera, and Photos.

Moreover, even the critical App Store can be uninstalled in the EU, as Apple has been forced to allow third-party app stores on iOS. If you reconsider, the App Store can be reinstalled from the settings menu with just a click, ensuring you’re not left stranded if third-party stores don’t perform well or if you accidentally uninstall Apple’s App Store.

More Support for Third-Party Apps

EU users will be pleased to learn that iOS 18.2 reintroduces support for web apps in third-party browsers. Apple had removed support for progressive web applications in iOS 17.4, citing privacy and security concerns, which the EU had considered retaliatory and promised to investigate.

iOS 18.2 also provides all users with enhanced options for changing default apps through a new dedicated settings menu. This not only makes it easier to switch your default apps but also allows you to change your default calling and messaging apps for the first time.

Enhanced Customization Options

Having more options to customize default applications is always a plus. It’s nice to have the choice, rather than letting a major tech company dictate what you can or cannot do with your phone. However, these features are only available in the EU, limiting their reach.

Unfortunately, while iPhone users in the EU can enjoy the benefits of the DMA, they do not have access to Apple Intelligence. This is due to challenges in deploying AI while complying with DMA regulations. This may change in the future, but for now, the timeline remains unclear.
