The iOS 18.2 update restores the full-screen video player in Photos, a much-anticipated adjustment that enhances navigation and pleases iPhone users unhappy with the previous design.

Relief for Apple Users

The iOS 18.2 update appears to resolve one of the most baffling design choices in the Photos app, much to the delight of users frustrated by recent changes.

Major Improvement in the Photos App

With the launch of iOS 18, Apple set out to revamp and enhance many of its key applications. The Photos app, in particular, saw a complete overhaul of its interface. While initial reactions to these updates were mixed, the recent announcement of enhanced video player functionality in the upcoming iOS 18.2 update could be a game-changer.

In the current iOS 18, videos in the Photos app initially play with a distracting white or black border, depending on whether light or dark mode is enabled. This border can only be removed by tapping the video and switching to full-screen mode. However, according to 9to5Mac, this feature has been revised in the latest iOS 18.2 beta version. Videos now always display in full-screen, with a simple tap required to hide the control panel.

A Welcome Step Back

This adjustment isn’t a major overhaul but rather a return to the old way of video playback in previous iOS versions. While I saw no issue with the current functionality, it seems enough users voiced their concerns to prompt Apple to revert. However, as this change is still in beta, there’s no guarantee it will be implemented in the final public version of iOS 18.2.

More Than Just Photos App Updates

The iOS 18.2 update isn’t just about tweaks to the Photos app; it also includes several of the promised features from Apple Intelligence. For instance, the recent public beta has introduced visual intelligence capabilities on the iPhone 16 series, along with the anticipated integration of ChatGPT with Siri. The beta also provides access to Apple’s Image Playground and Gemoji, making image generation on an iPhone easier.

iOS 18.2 is shaping up to be a substantial update, so significant that it’s easy to overlook some of the smaller changes. While not everyone may have issues with the video player, it’s set to enhance the experience for those who disliked the initial change, making the best iPhones even better.
