iPhone Revolution: Discover How the 2nm Processor Will Change Everything

The iPhone 18 is set to be the world's first to feature a 2nm chip, potentially overshadowing its predecessor, the iPhone 17.
Major Technological Leap for iPhone 18
A recent leak reported by MacRumors from Weibo indicates a technological revolution for the upcoming iPhone 18. According to a “Mobile phone chip expert”, the device might feature the first-ever 2 nanometer (nm) processor, named A20.
Packaging Shift for Enhanced Power
The 2026 iPhone is expected to undergo a packaging method change from InFo (Integrated Fan-Out packaging) to WMCM (Water-Level Multi-Chip Module packaging), boosting its memory to 12GB. This development would allow for a more complex integration of components, including CPU, GPU, and DRAM, within the same package that could be stacked vertically or side by side. A more flexible arrangement likely leading to increased processing power, speed, and efficiency.
The Dream of an Even Thinner iPhone
Apple, known for its thin device obsession, might see the WMCM production as an opportunity to narrow down to the iPhone 17 Air or even the iPhone 18 Air. However, supply chain analyst Ming-Chi Kuo recently suggested that only the iPhone 18 Pro might feature the new 2nm processor, primarily due to costs.
The 2nm miniaturization allows for more components on the same chip, enabling the creation of more comprehensive SoCs (System on Chip). This includes integrating GPUs (graphic processors), 5G modems, neural processing units (NPU), and more into a single, compact component.
Technological Vanguard for Apple
Apple’s partner, TSMC, plans to start manufacturing the 2nm processors in 2025, and Apple could be the first company to deploy this architecture in a smartphone. MPCE, the leaker behind the news, is noted for reliability, having accurately predicted the chips for the iPhone 15 series and the development of an AI server processor by Apple in collaboration with TSMC.
The introduction of 2nm processors in smartphones will revolutionize performance and energy efficiency. Users will enjoy enhanced performance while extending battery life and reducing overheating issues.
