Google has removed yet another feature from Fitbit, leading to speculation that the brand may soon be phased out.

Another Fitbit Feature Bites the Dust

The bass lines of Queen’s “Another One Bites the Dust” might be echoing through Google’s halls as the tech giant continues its trend of phasing out Fitbit features, the renowned smartwatch brand it acquired in 2021.

Promising Past, Uncertain Future

Since its acquisition, Google has been gradually dismantling what made Fitbit unique. While some of Fitbit’s top features have now been integrated into Google’s leading smartwatches like the Pixel Watch 3, Fitbit’s future has never looked more uncertain.

Gradual Dismantling Process

The dismantling began in 2022 when Google required all Fitbit users to switch to a Google account. By 2023, community challenges were removed. In 2024, Google discontinued the popular Versa and Sense smartwatch lines. Now, in 2025, Google is removing perfectly functional features from existing devices, including Google Assistant.

One Less Voice Assistant

Over a year ago, Google announced its plan to remove the Google voice assistant feature from the Fitbit Versa and Sense lines. Now, it appears to be fulfilling that promise. A moderator’s post on the Fitbit community forum dated March 21, 2025, confirms this.

“In the coming weeks, we will gradually be removing Google Assistant from your Fitbit device. This means that voice control of Google Assistant for activities will soon no longer be available on your Fitbit device,” states the Fitbit forum post.

Notably, Amazon’s Alexa will continue to be available on the Versa 4 and Sense 2 models in supported countries, at least for now.

Disgruntled Customers and Emerging Alternatives

This move by Google has sparked outrage, especially since the Versa 4 and Sense 2 watches are still actively sold at full price not only by Google but also by major retailers such as Amazon and Best Buy. For potential buyers of the Fitbit Sense 2 or Versa 4, the Garmin Vivoactive 6 appears to be an excellent alternative. Google’s Pixel Watch 3, which incorporates many of Fitbit’s best features, remains another option. However, opting for a Pixel Watch would be playing right into Google’s hands.
