On Wednesday, January 15, following Donald Trump's announcement of a ceasefire, excitement surged in Gaza as Palestinians celebrated the truce agreement. The long-term impacts of this decision remain uncertain.

Ceasefire Declared in Gaza

After 15 months of devastating conflict, Gaza can finally breathe. On Wednesday, January 15, 2025, a ceasefire was declared between Israel and Hamas, sparking spontaneous celebrations among the Palestinians.

International Mediation

The ceasefire agreement was brokered with the help of Qatar, Egypt, and the United States. A source close to the negotiations disclosed the information, which was later confirmed by an American official.

The newly elected American President, Donald Trump, officially announced the news, referring to it as an “agreement on hostages in the Middle East.”

Palestinian Jubilation

Thousands of Palestinians rejoiced across Gaza upon hearing the ceasefire news. In Deir el-Balah, hundreds celebrated in front of the Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital, which had seen many casualties since the war began.

Spontaneous gatherings sprang up in several areas, even as Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office stated that some issues were still unresolved. Despite this, optimism prevailed with hopes to finalize negotiations overnight.

Ceasefire Confirmed

The ceasefire was finally confirmed by Qatar’s Prime Minister, Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al-Thani, and is set to commence on Sunday. In the initial 42-day phase, 33 hostages taken during Hamas’s attack that triggered the war will be released.

Joy Amid Mourning

The agreement brought immense joy to Palestinians despite their grief and loss. “We have lost so much, we’ve lost everything. We need a lot of rest. As soon as the ceasefire starts, I’ll visit the cemetery to see my brother and several relatives,” said a Palestinian woman.

Celebrations in Ramallah’s central square, the seat of the Palestinian Authority in occupied West Bank, were more subdued, with drivers honking as they passed a small group of people distributing pastries.

Amid these celebrations, a strong sentiment resonates: “Those who claim there’s no victory are wrong: there is an undeniable victory,” stated Omar Assaf, a local resident, “because the enemy failed in all its objectives, while the resistance retains its strength.”
