Israel Warns of Renewed Gaza Conflict Unless Hamas Releases Hostages

Israel has issued a stern warning to Gaza, stating its readiness to resume hostilities if Hamas does not immediately release the hostages it is holding.

A Fragile Ceasefire

Since January 19, 2025, a ceasefire has been in effect between the Palestinian Islamist movement Hamas and Israel. However, it appears to be faltering amidst escalating tensions in recent days.

An Imminent Confrontation?

On Tuesday, February 11, 2025, Israel issued an ultimatum to Hamas: release the hostages by Saturday, February 15, or face the possibility of “intense fighting.” Despite Israel’s accusations of ceasefire violations, Hamas claims to remain committed to the agreement.

The Israeli military, anticipating a potential escalation, has mobilized troops around the war-torn Gaza Strip and announced reinforcements.

International Interventions

Israel’s long-time ally, Donald Trump, has threatened Hamas with severe consequences if the hostages are not released by noon on Saturday. This warning follows threats from Hamas to delay the hostage releases.

Similarly, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has urged the continuation of releases to prevent a resurgence of hostilities that could lead to an “immense tragedy.”

A Humanitarian Issue

The United States has drawn international outrage with its proposal to place Gaza under American control and relocate its residents to Egypt and Jordan. Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sissi has strongly opposed this plan, reaffirming the Palestinians’ right to live on their land.

In total, 251 people were kidnapped during Hamas’s attack on Israel, which triggered the war on October 7, 2023. Among them, 73 remain hostages in Gaza, with at least 35 reported dead by the Israeli military. The release of these hostages remains a critical point of tension that could undermine the existing ceasefire.
