J.D. Vance’s Unofficial Visit to Greenland

The U.S. Vice President made an uninvited trip to Greenland, a region previously considered for annexation by Donald Trump.
A Tense Visit
This Friday, March 28, 2025, JD Vance, alongside his wife Usha, will visit the sole U.S. military base in Greenland. The Vice President’s office states the visit aims to “gather information on Arctic security issues” and to engage with stationed troops.
However, this visit is seen as provocative following Donald Trump’s statements about his desire to annex Greenland “to secure his country and the rest of the world.”
Europe’s Firm Response
In reaction to the annexation plans, supported by the European Union, Denmark and Greenland have taken a firmer stance. Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen has condemned the “unacceptable pressure” from the U.S.
She reminded that Denmark has been a loyal ally to the U.S., fighting alongside them for many decades, including in Iraq and Afghanistan.
A Strategic Base at the Heart of the Conflict
The U.S. military base at Pituffik, located on the northwest coast of Greenland, serves as a key outpost for American anti-missile defense, especially against Russia. JD Vance and his wife Usha, with Energy Minister Chris Wright, are expected at this strategic location.
Greenland: A Territory Not for Sale
Both the Greenlandic people and its political leaders, along with Denmark, the governing body, oppose the notion of becoming part of the United States. “The United States knows that Greenland is not for sale and does not wish to be part of the United States,” reiterated the Danish Prime Minister.
The majority Inuit population also rejects the idea of becoming American, according to a poll published in January.
