Due to heightened risks beyond the usual, the Prime Minister has decided to cancel the planned trip to Central Asia.

Japan Haunted by the Specter of a Megaquake

Japan is on high alert. For the first time since establishing an alert system post the devastating 2011 earthquake, experts are warning of a potential megaquake. This alarming assessment follows a recent 7.1 magnitude tremor in the country’s south.

Prime Minister Fumio Kishida Cancels His Trip

In response to this threat, Prime Minister Fumio Kishida has canceled his planned trip to Central Asia, stating: “As Prime Minister, bearing the highest responsibility for crisis management, I have decided to remain in Japan for at least a week.”

Japan’s Perilous Geographic Situation

Japan, located at the convergence of several tectonic plates along the Pacific Ring of Fire, experiences one of the highest levels of seismic activity globally, with about 1,500 tremors annually, most of which are of low magnitude. Despite the adoption of anti-seismic building codes and public awareness of emergency measures, the threat of a deadly earthquake looms large over the nation.

A Tangible Threat

Experts from the specialized newsletter “Earthquake Insights” state: “Although predicting earthquakes is impossible, the occurrence of one earthquake generally increases the probability of another.” According to these scientists, while the risk of another quake remains low, it is ever-present. Government models estimate a 70% chance of a megaquake hitting Japan in the coming decades, potentially threatening nearly 300,000 people along the Pacific coast.

The reality of these projections has already struck the nation. On January 1st, at least 318 people died in a severe earthquake in the country’s center. The tragic record remains the March 2011 magnitude 9 earthquake that triggered a tsunami, resulting in approximately 20,000 deaths or missing persons.
