What role is Emmanuel Macron playing in Egypt this Monday as war once again escalates in Gaza?

Crucial Meeting for Peace in Gaza

Emmanuel Macron is set to visit Egypt and Jordan on Monday, April 7, signaling his strong commitment to securing a lasting solution for Gaza.

Mobilization Against Controversial Plans

Emmanuel Macron plans to voice his support for the Arab plan that seeks a political and humanitarian resolution to the crisis in the Palestinian enclave.

This plan directly counters Donald Trump’s controversial intentions to have the United States take control of Gaza, a move the French President has described as a “dramatic step backwards”.

Strong Opposition to Population Displacement

Reacting to Trump’s proposal to relocate Gaza’s 2.4 million inhabitants to Egypt and Jordan, France has strongly opposed forced population transfers.

An initiative by Egypt aims to rebuild Gaza without relocating its residents, a plan Macron supports but believes needs further “strengthening”, especially in terms of security and governance.

Commitment to a Two-State Solution

Macron also intends to discuss the two-state solution, Israeli and Palestinian, at a conference he will co-chair at the UN in June with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. This event could set the stage for France to recognize a Palestinian state.

Renewed Humanitarian Support

Alongside these talks, the French president will push for reopening transit points to facilitate humanitarian aid to Gaza and reaffirm France’s commitment to supporting the Gazan population. He will also meet with staff from French NGOs, the United Nations, the Egyptian Red Crescent, and Palestinian beneficiaries of humanitarian efforts.

During this visit, several economic agreements between France and Egypt are expected, particularly in transportation, health, renewable energy, and higher education sectors.
