Speaking at last week’s Tokyo Game Show, Ken Kuturagi recalled the challenges faced when entering the gaming console market with PlayStation 1. In 1993, as the head of the PS1 development team, he and his team were driven by a passion for the project. Despite this, they faced significant skepticism. Many executives advised against launching the console, citing failures of “several companies” who had attempted similar feats. Kuturagi even revealed that “even within Sony, no one believed in our success.”
The PlayStation: An Undeniable Success
Ironically, the PS1 achieved resounding success. Not only did the PlayStation 1 feature numerous exclusive games, but it also won the console wars in two consecutive generations. Classic PS1 games such as Final Fantasy 7, Metal Gear Solid, Castlevania: Symphony Of The Night, and Gran Turismo continue to be cherished by gamers. Three decades after its launch, the PlayStation brand remains strong, with the PS5 reportedly leading sales against the Xbox Series X/S, with about 61.7 million units sold compared to Microsoft’s 28.3 million.
