Massive Boycott in Croatia Over Inflation Causes Major Retail Losses

By Friday, January 24, 2024, a policy had been implemented that resulted in a drop of over 50% in merchants' revenue. How can these businesses recover from such a significant loss?
Croatians Against Inflation: A Call for a Boycott
In response to soaring inflation, Croatian consumer groups have urged the public to boycott local stores, particularly targeting three major retail chains.
Impact Already Felt
On Friday, January 24, 2025, a similar boycott led to a dramatic drop in merchant sales by over 50%, as reported by the country’s tax authorities. The groups have issued another call for action on Friday, January 31.
A Widespread Boycott
Josip Kelemen from the “Halo, Inspector” association has called for an extensive boycott. He advises against shopping, using delivery services, visiting banks, dining out, purchasing online, paying bills, and refueling cars.
He stated: “We ask Croatia to stand still, as we saw last Friday, Croatians sent a strong message.”
Specific Products and Chains Targeted
The boycott specifically targets three chains: Lidl, Eurospin, and DM. Consumers are urged to avoid purchasing from these stores for a week starting the following Thursday. It also focuses on specific product categories that have seen significant price hikes recently, including soft drinks, bottled water, and detergents.
According to Josip Kelemen, this is not an attack on these chains, but a way for consumers to voice their concerns over rampant inflation.
