White House Pressure: Mark Zuckerberg’s Regret
Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Meta Platforms, disclosed that the Biden administration pressured the company to censor certain COVID-19 content on its social media platforms. In a letter to a U.S. congressional committee earlier this week, Zuckerberg expressed regret for complying with these demands and outlined the changes Meta Platforms has since implemented.
Details of the Pressure and Policy Shift
In his letter, Zuckerberg stated: “In 2021, senior officials from the Biden administration, including the White House, persistently pressured our teams for months to censor various COVID-19 content, including humor and satire, showing significant frustration when we disagreed”.
Zuckerberg emphasized that this pressure was misguided and he regretted that Meta Platforms did not speak out more at the time. He also mentioned that, in hindsight and with new information, the company made some decisions it “would not make today.”
Regarding similar future demands, Zuckerberg affirmed that Meta Platforms would resist.
The Biden Administration’s Response
According to a report by CNN, a Biden administration representative stated that at the time, they encouraged “responsible actions to protect public health and safety.” “Our stance has been clear and consistent: we believe that tech companies and other private entities should consider the impact of their actions on the American people, while making independent choices about the information they present”, the representative told CNN.
