Meta Plans Launch of First True Augmented Reality Headset by 2027, Eyes Future with Three New Smart Glasses Models

A recent report suggests that Meta, Facebook's parent company, might shake up the augmented reality industry by launching its first true augmented reality headset by 2027.
Meta, formerly known as Facebook, is set to make a significant breakthrough in wearable technology. According to a report by Mark Gurman of *Bloomberg*, Meta is developing three new models of smart glasses, paving the way to its first true augmented reality (AR) glasses.
**Expansion of the Existing Range**
Meta already markets smart glasses in collaboration with Ray-Ban, known internally as Supernova. Gurman reports that this existing range will be introduced to new markets, though specific markets were not disclosed. Additionally, Meta’s technology will be applied to frames from other brands owned by its partner, Luxottica Group. This includes the launch of Supernova 2, based on Oakley’s Sphaera model, designed for cyclists and athletes, featuring a centrally placed camera.
**Towards a True AR Experience**
The third model, internally dubbed Hypernova, would mark a further step towards a true AR experience. Users would be able to run simple software applications, view notifications, and display photos taken by the device. This model, offering more advanced features, is currently priced at a steep $1,000.
**A Smart Bracelet and Camera-Equipped Earbuds**
Furthermore, Meta is developing a smart bracelet that could control its smart glasses, a wrist-based option similar to the one used for the Orion prototype. Additionally, Gurman confirms that Meta is still working on prototypes of camera-equipped earbuds that could compete with Apple’s AirPods. This project, revealed by *The Information* in May 2024, appears to have faced developmental challenges.
Clearly, Meta is determined to push the boundaries of wearable technology. It remains to be seen how these ambitious projects will materialize in the market in the coming years.
