Minecraft to End VR Support Next Spring

The PlayStation 5 now finally boasts a native version of the game.
The End of the VR/MR Era for Minecraft
The curtain is closing on the VR and mixed reality experience for Minecraft enthusiasts. Last month, Mojang, the game’s developer, announced that support for PlayStation VR will end with a final update in March 2025, akin to the hiss of a fading creeper.
A Toll for the VR/MR Ecosystem
The latest patch notes for the Bedrock edition echo the end of an era, stating, “Our ability to support VR/MR devices has concluded,” with no further updates post-March 2025. This move is particularly disheartening given Minecraft‘s consistently high sales figures, marking a significant loss for the VR and mixed reality realms.
Block Builders Not Left Behind
However, all is not lost for block builders who enjoyed Minecraft in VR. Post the March 2025 update, patch notes assure that “you can continue to build in your worlds, and your purchases on the Marketplace (including Minecoins) will remain accessible on non-VR/MR graphic devices like computer screens.” It’s a bittersweet development for a game that meshed so well with VR.
A Glimmer of Hope for the Minecraft Community
But there’s still good news for the Minecraft community. After a long wait, the game now boasts a native PlayStation 5 edition. Sony’s latest console has been stuck with the PS4 version until now, but the new update offers 4K resolution and 60 frames per second, even at extended rendering distances. PS5 owners who already have the PS4 version can grab this upgrade for free from the PlayStation Store. With the ‘Bundles of Bravery’ update released yesterday, now is the perfect time to dive into a new cubic adventure.
