The statute, known as Missouri 15 CSR 60-18, mirrors recent legislative trends across the United States. Notably, it compels affected platforms to install compliant verification systems, extending the requirement even to mobile operating systems. Violations could trigger civil penalties reaching $10,000. State Attorney General Catherine Hanaway described the law as a “major milestone in online child protection,” underscoring its intent to shield young users.

However, the promise of safeguarding minors comes with contentious side effects. Critics have voiced serious unease over the necessity for users to share sensitive personal data—ranging from photographs and IDs to bank details—with private third-party companies. Skeptics warn that such requirements could actually undermine security, turning these platforms into lucrative targets for cybercriminals.

One high-profile incident amplifies these fears: in October, a significant breach on Discord exposed stolen identity documents collected through age checks. While some verification providers insist they erase submitted data immediately, there’s little assurance that this happens universally.
