The AI landscape welcomes a sensational newcomer: Mistral AI’s conversational tool, “Le Chat”, now available as a mobile app. This release has captured significant attention at the ongoing International Summit for AI Action in Paris, which continues until February 11.
Aiming to Compete with AI Giants
Under the leadership of the energetic Arthur Mensch, French startup Mistral AI is quickly carving out a niche in the AI scene, aiming to rival American and Chinese sector giants. Its primary target: OpenAI’s Chat GPT.
Available for download since February 6 on both Android and Apple platforms, Le Chat allows users to ask questions via their smartphones, marketing itself as “Your ultimate AI sidekick for life and work.”
Political Support and Strategic Partnerships
Mistral AI’s success is not just about product quality; it’s also backed by a robust distribution network including Google, Microsoft, Amazon, and IBM, along with significant political support from President Emmanuel Macron.
Additionally, Mistral AI has inked deals with France Travail, Veolia, and Agence France-Presse (AFP), enabling Le Chat to utilize news dispatches in responding to user queries.
A Meteoric Rise
Founded in April 2023 by Arthur Mensch, a former researcher at Google DeepMind, Mistral AI has experienced rapid growth. Within three funding rounds, it has secured over one billion euros, reaching a valuation of about 6 billion euros. Now based in London, Palo Alto, and Singapore, it is recognized as a European AI champion.
However, Arthur Mensch has voiced criticism of the European AI regulations, which he finds cumbersome and outdated.
