A tragedy is unfolding in Bangkok where an earthquake caused a building under construction to collapse, tragically trapping 43 people beneath the rubble.

Major Earthquake Shakes Myanmar

On Friday, March 28, 2025, Myanmar was struck by a 7.7 magnitude earthquake, reported by the US Geological Survey (USGS). The epicenter was located 16 kilometers northwest of Sagaing city, around 2:20 PM local time.

Shockwaves Felt Beyond Borders

The tremors had a significant impact not only in Myanmar but also in neighboring countries. Vibrations were felt as far as Thailand and China, triggering panic scenes and massive evacuations in Bangkok.

An eyewitness told AFP: “I heard the noise while I was sleeping at home, and I ran as far as possible in my pajamas out of the building.”

Disastrous Consequences of the Earthquake

The earthquake’s effects were catastrophic. In Naypyidaw, the capital of Myanmar, roads were warped by the tremors, and ceiling pieces fell from buildings.

In Bangkok, some subway services were halted, and a 30-story building under construction collapsed, potentially trapping 43 workers on site.

Myanmar: A High-Risk Zone

It’s crucial to note that Myanmar is a country prone to earthquakes. Between 1930 and 1956, six earthquakes with magnitudes of 7 or higher occurred near the Sagaing Fault.

The country’s weak infrastructure and inadequate healthcare services make the population particularly vulnerable in the event of natural disasters.
