Netanyahu Warns Lebanon of Facing Gaza’s Fate

On October 8, 2024, the Israeli Prime Minister released a video directly addressing the Lebanese people, urging them to free their nation from Hezbollah's control. How will the Lebanese respond to this appeal?
Israel’s Call to the Lebanese
On Tuesday, October 8, 2024, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu released a video urging the Lebanese people to “free your country from Hezbollah”, coinciding with Israel’s expanding ground offensive in Lebanon.
A Warning of Destruction
Netanyahu highlighted the devastating consequences experienced in Gaza as a caution of what Lebanon could face, referencing “destruction and suffering similar to what we see in Gaza”. The ongoing conflict in Gaza has already claimed tens of thousands of lives.
A Weakened Hezbollah?
Following Israeli airstrikes, Defense Minister Yoav Gallant described Hezbollah as a “battered and broken organization”. Despite these setbacks, Hezbollah and Hamas continue to retaliate by launching rockets into Israel.
Widespread Military Operations
Since September 30, Israel’s ground assault in Lebanon has intensified, with a fourth division being deployed for targeted operations against Hezbollah. Aerial strikes are concurrently being carried out across southern and eastern Lebanon, including the southern suburbs of Beirut.
The conflict has had severe civilian repercussions. In Syria, an Israeli strike killed seven civilians in Damascus, and in Gaza, 17 Palestinians, including children, were killed. On the Israeli side, a Hamas attack on October 7, 2023, resulted in 1,206 deaths, predominantly among civilians.
Gaza’s residents are still “living in tents” and “struggling daily to feed their families,” reports Sarah Davies, an official from the International Committee of the Red Cross.
