Netherlands: Wolf Terrorizes Walkers Near Utrecht

Following several incidents with a wolf, Dutch authorities warned hikers on Wednesday to exercise extra caution in the mountainous Utrecht region. Would you still dare to walk there?
Panic in Austerlitz: Wolf on the Loose
Following multiple recent incidents involving a wolf, Dutch authorities have urged the public to remain vigilant. These alarming events have shaken the nation, including an attack on a child, a bite inflicted on a young girl, and the tragic death of a poodle.
Incident Hotspot: Utrecht Ridge
The disturbing episodes all occurred near the village of Austerlitz, located in an area known as the “Utrecht Ridge Hills”.
This scenic region, blanketed by dense forest, is popular among hikers, cyclists, and runners. Following these incidents, Utrecht authorities have warned: “It is advisable not to visit these forests with young children”.
DNA Test: A Frightening Confirmation
After an incident where a child was knocked over by a “large animal” and another where a girl was bitten, a DNA analysis was carried out. The results definitively confirmed the presence of a wolf.
Monitoring the Wolf Presence
It’s important to note that wolves made a significant return to the Netherlands in 2015, after a 150-year absence.
Since then, as many as dozens of these animals have been spotted across the country, although they typically remain elusive and avoid human contact.
