New Initiative to Fund and Support Open-Source Chromium Projects

A new initiative is set to fund and support Chromium-based open-source projects, providing a fresh boost to the developer community.
A Joint Initiative by Google and the Linux Foundation
Google and the Linux Foundation have announced a new initiative called “Supporters of Chromium-Based Browsers”. This project aims to enhance the development of the open-source browser Chromium, which underpins the popular Chrome browser. Although Google has been the primary funder of Chromium, it has reassured that its funding will not decrease and is encouraging other stakeholders to increase their investments in the project.
A Collaborative Space for Chromium Development
Under the auspices of the Linux Foundation, this initiative aims to fund the open-source development of Chromium projects and ensure adequate support for contributions that lead to technological advancements. It also strives to create a “neutral space” where developers, academics, and major industry players can collaborate. Besides Google, Microsoft, Meta, and Opera have also pledged their support to this cause.
Enhanced Support for Chromium
Google initiated this program in response to “many businesses and developers highlighting the crucial importance of the Chromium project for their work”. They intend to provide more than just technical support. It is noteworthy that Chrome is not the only browser based on Chromium; Microsoft’s Edge and Opera also utilize this source code, which explains their involvement in the initiative.
The Future of Google and Chromium
It is crucial to remember that the Department of Justice has recently called for the breakup of Google, including the sale of the Chrome browser. Google insists that it will continue to support the Chromium project, but only time will tell if the potential sale of Chrome will impact its contributions.
