Nintendo Sales Decline Ahead of Imminent Switch 2 Launch

As the upcoming release of the new Switch 2 console approaches, Nintendo is witnessing a significant decline in its sales.

Nintendo Faces Sales Dip

Video game titan Nintendo is experiencing a slowdown with its eight-year-old Switch console, a common trend as consumers anticipate a new model. Consequently, the company has adjusted its sales forecast for the current fiscal year from 12.5 million to 11 million units.

Games Fail to Offset Decline

New game releases have not been able to sustain sales momentum, with revenue in this segment dropping by 24.4% compared to the same period last year. Only a few titles, such as Donkey Kong Country Returns and Xenoblade Chronicles X, are slated for early 2025, ahead of the Switch 2 unveiling on April 2.

Special Event for the Switch 2

The reveal will occur during a special Nintendo Direct event, followed by hands-on experience events in global cities. The initial events will take place in New York and Paris from April 4 to 6, with other cities in North America, Europe, Oceania, and Asia to follow. As for the new model’s features, Nintendo has revealed little, except that it will be backward compatible with current Switch games.

High Hopes for the Switch 2

Despite the sales drop, Nintendo investors remain optimistic, pinning high hopes on the Switch 2. However, to ensure the new console’s success, Nintendo must convince buyers of significant improvements over the current Switch, ensure ample stock availability, and maintain satisfaction among existing Switch owners.
