Nintendo Switch 2 Patents Reveal: A Unique Joy-Con and Brand-New Controller!

Recently unveiled patents for the Nintendo Switch 2 reveal a unique feature for the Joy-Con and introduce a brand-new controller, promising an even more immersive and innovative gaming experience.
Revolutionary Controllers for the Nintendo Switch 2
The upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 promises a “closer look” at its launch event. Recent patents published by WIPO hint at groundbreaking features for its new Joy-Con controllers, potentially transforming how games are played.
Mouse-like Functionality
Patent illustrations for the Nintendo Switch 2 indicate that the controllers will function similarly to a mouse. Highlighted in the Switch 2 trailer, these controllers can glide over surfaces. Images depict a Joy-Con lying horizontally, gripped like a mouse with fingers on the R and ZR buttons, and thumb on the stick, suggesting an optical sensor on the side of the Joy-Con, referred to as a “mouse operation sensor.”
Dual Controller Capability
The mouse functionality is not limited to one controller. Other images show that both Joy-Cons could be used in mouse mode. Additionally, while one controller is in mouse mode, the other can be held vertically, offering more button options and mimicking PC gameplay with keyboard’s WASD keys.
A “Pro” Version of the Controller?
One of the published patents reveals a more traditional console controller that splits like the Joy-Cons, equipped with grips rather than the usual vertical layout. This could be the “Pro” version of the controller for the Switch 2, possibly featuring mouse functionality. More details will emerge at the next Nintendo Direct scheduled for April 2, 2025.
As an added bonus, Nintendo has confirmed it is considering “affordability” in pricing the Switch 2.
