Nintendo Switch 2: Timeline of Rumors and Leaks

Here's a chronological overview of the rumors and information leaks about the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 console.
The Journey to the Nintendo Switch 2
Following the industry-shaking release of the Nintendo Wii, the Japanese powerhouse continued its momentum with the launch of the Nintendo Switch in March 2017. As we noted in our review, the Switch is a “fantastic console for all types of players, even if you’re not a Nintendo fan”, priced at an affordable $299, competitive with the PS4 and Xbox One.
The Different Versions of the Switch
Two years post-launch, Nintendo surprised us with a “lite” version of the console. The Nintendo Switch Lite, priced at $199, is purely for handheld play, lacking detachable Joy-Con controllers and the ability to connect to a TV. It’s a great console and its lower price makes it an excellent entry-level option.
In 2021, the Switch OLED version was released, featuring a slightly larger 7-inch screen. However, as we concluded in our Switch OLED review, “if you take it for what it is, the Switch OLED is a solid system, an easy pick for gamers yet to upgrade to a Switch. But if you consider what it could have been, the Switch OLED might just be a stopgap before Nintendo takes another big gamble on another inventive idea”.
Rumors About the Nintendo Switch 2
Rumors of a Nintendo Switch 2 started swirling as early as 2019, with speculation intensifying in 2023 after leaks and statements from Nintendo fueled excitement. These rumors grew in 2024, with conflicting reports about the release date, technical specifications, and pricing of the new console.
In January 2025, Nintendo unveiled the Switch 2 with a teaser trailer that answered many questions and left others hanging. Nintendo promised that a future Nintendo Direct on April 2, 2025, would provide more details, including technical specs, potential new games, and the function of the new C button.
As we await the next official announcement from Nintendo, rumors continue to fuel discussions. Recent speculation has focused on the pricing of the new console, estimated between $299 and $499, with a speculated launch window in June. Meanwhile, the gaming world remains on edge for every new detail about this highly anticipated console.
