OnePlus 13 Receives Major Update with Google’s Gemini Nano

The latest OnePlus 13 has just received its first major software update, which notably includes Google's Gemini Nano.
Major Update for the OnePlus 13
The newly launched OnePlus 13 has quickly received its first significant software update. This update introduces several enhancements, most notably the integration of Google’s artificial intelligence, Gemini Nano.
Significant Improvements and New Features
While launch updates typically focus on minor fixes and subtle improvements, the OnePlus 13’s update includes enhancements to camera performance, connectivity, and system stability, among others. Additionally, it introduces major new features like Gemini Nano. Beyond AI improvements, users will enjoy better 4K 60fps recording quality and the December 2024 security patch installation.
AI Reinforcement
The addition of AI is undoubtedly the highlight of this update. However, it raises the question of why OnePlus did not include this support in the initial release. Although not confirmed by OnePlus, this detail was uncovered by Mishaal Rahman, an Android expert at Android Authority, who found that the update added Google’s AICore app to the OnePlus 13, necessary for installing AI models.
Limited Use of AI
Currently, the device seems only capable of utilizing Nano for the Magic Compose feature in Google Messages. Unlike Google’s Pixel phones, which leverage on-device processing of Gemini Nano for more extensive functionalities, this limitation is also seen in devices like the Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Xiaomi 14T Pro, not just the OnePlus 13.
Magic Compose, still an experimental feature, offers response suggestions in messages, using both generative AI and recognizing the context of conversations. For most phones, this feature operates in the cloud, but with Gemini Nano, it processes directly on the device, including on the OnePlus 13.
Promising Future Ahead
While this may be mixed news for future OnePlus 13 owners, it’s still positive. The support for Gemini Nano might soon extend to non-Pixel devices, meaning more locally processed AI features. Especially since OnePlus has already announced that the Snapdragon 8 Elite chip powering the OnePlus 13 will support Gemini Nano’s new multimodal capabilities.
However, only time will tell what the future holds. In the meantime, feel free to check out our complete review of the OnePlus 13 and OnePlus 13R for an overview of everything the new phones have to offer.
