OpenAI Launches Canvas, Its New ChatGPT Interface

The new collaboration feature operates in a separate window, designed specifically for writing and coding projects.
OpenAI Unveils Canvas: A Revolutionary Interface for ChatGPT
OpenAI, the artificial intelligence powerhouse, has just announced the testing phase of a new work interface for ChatGPT named Canvas. This innovation was introduced on the company’s official blog and is currently available to ChatGPT Plus and Team users. Enterprise and Edu users will gain access to Canvas starting next week.
Canvas: A Collaborative Platform for Writing and Coding
Canvas stands out as a virtual interface space for writing and coding projects, allowing users to consult ChatGPT for specific parts of a project. A separate window opens alongside the main chat area where users can place their writing or code on this new “canvas”. They can then highlight certain sections for the model to focus on and edit, acting “like a copy editor or a code reviewer”, according to the blog.
Intuitive Usage and Advanced Editing Features
Canvas can be activated manually by typing “use canvas” in your prompt. It can also open automatically when it “detects a scenario where it might be useful”. Additionally, Canvas offers several shortcuts for writing and coding projects. Users can request ChatGPT for editing suggestions, length adjustments, reading level modifications, and emojis for writing projects. For coders, ChatGPT can review specific lines of code, add logs and comments for clarity, fix bugs, and convert code to other languages such as JavaScript, TypeScript, Python, Java, C++, or PHP in Canvas mode.
Aligning ChatGPT with Other AI Assistants
OpenAI’s Canvas feature aligns ChatGPT with other AI assistants that have dedicated workspaces for focusing on specific areas of a project, similar to Anthropic’s Artifacts and the coding AI model, Cursor.
