Kalinowski’s move has sparked significant excitement and speculation about potential outcomes, including the development of an OpenAI robot or consumer-oriented devices like smart glasses.

A Stellar Tech Industry Track Record

Kalinowski boasts an impressive resume. She spearheaded Meta Reality Labs’ augmented reality hardware team, developing products such as Orion smart glasses, Meta Quest 2, and Oculus Rift. Before Meta, she was a technical lead at Apple, contributing to the development of the Mac Pro and MacBook Air.

Collaboration with Apple’s Jony Ive

News of Kalinowski’s appointment coincides with revelations that Apple’s famed designer Jony Ive is working with OpenAI CEO Sam Altman on a new AI-focused hardware device, potentially launching in 2025. While these developments appear unrelated, they underscore a significant push towards AI hardware.

When asked about potential prototypes OpenAI might be working on, Kalinowski stated she hasn’t officially started and is unaware of any such projects currently in development.

OpenAI and Future Projects

While details on OpenAI’s hardware projects remain sparse, early this year, the AI company was reported to be in talks with humanoid robotics startup Figure for potential investments.

“AI is the most thrilling engineering frontier in technology right now, and I couldn’t be more excited to be part of this team,” Kalinowski remarked.
