Pixelfed, Instagram’s Decentralized Rival, Launches on iOS and Android
Pixelfed, a decentralized rival to Instagram, is now available on iOS and Android, providing a fresh alternative for social media enthusiasts who love sharing photos and videos.
Pixelfed, the Privacy-Focused Instagram Alternative, Launches Mobile App
iOS and Android users can now enjoy photo sharing without compromising their privacy. Pixelfed, a decentralized and open-source photo-sharing platform, is now available as a mobile application.
Immediate Success
Since its inception in 2018, Pixelfed has captivated users with its privacy-conscious approach. Initially web-only or accessible through third-party apps, Pixelfed debuted on Android on January 9 and has since launched on iOS. Following these releases, Daniel Supernault, the creator of the platform, revealed that over 11,000 users joined within 24 hours, and more than 78,000 posts have been shared on Pixelfed to date.
Pixelfed, a Response to Instagram’s Controversial Practices
The rise of Pixelfed can be partly attributed to users seeking alternatives to Instagram, disillusioned by recent policy changes by the Meta-owned platform, including the removal of third-party fact-checking and revisions to its “Hate Speech” policy that now permit derogatory comments towards women and transgender individuals. Additionally, Meta has blocked some links to Pixelfed on Facebook, treating them as spam and removing the posts. A company representative stated this was an error and that the posts would be restored. This incident further boosted Pixelfed’s appeal as a more ethical and privacy-respecting social media platform.
An Ad-Free Platform That Respects Data
Unlike its rivals, Pixelfed stands out with its no-ad policy and commitment to not sharing user data with third parties. Powered by the ActivityPub protocol, the same technology behind several other decentralized social networks like Mastodon and Flipboard, Pixelfed offers an uncompromised image-sharing experience.
